PWYP Australia pay’s tribute and acknowledges the passing of a dear friend and fierce defender of social justice and the environment R. Sreedhar. As a trained geologist, Sreedhar first worked with mainstream exploration organisations, including state oil company, ONGC Ltd. In 1985, he started working with communities on environmental and alternate technology establishing the Environmental Systems Branch of Development Alternatives. He then co-founded TARU (‘91), Network on Ethics and Climate Change (’94), the Biodiversity Conservation India Limited (‘95), and PEOPLE (’99) – the largest alliance of mining affected communities. More recently he set-up the Environics Trust, Mine Labour Protection Campaign, the EIA Resource and Response Centre, Occupational and Environmental Health Network of India (2008), and Mineral Inheritors Rights Association (2020). Right up until the end of his life he worked hard for the rights and interests of mining impacted communities, with great bravery and selflessness. He will be greatly missed among his PWYP colleagues globally for his incredible knowledge and insights and his great generosity in sharing that knowledge. All the best wishes and condolences to his family.
